Dry needling looks like this
How does Dry Needling work?
• Functional dry needling (FDN) is a technique that treats the neuromusculoskeletal system and is utilized by a physical therapist with specialized training • It utilizes a small, very thin, filiform needle to penetrate the skin and target dysfunctional tissues of the body that may be causing your pain or weakness • It acts as a reset for the muscles, nerves, and connective tissues and can help speed up recovery times to get you back to being active and doing what you enjoy
Who can benefit from this?
- This treatment can address a number of acute and chronic neuromusculoskeletal conditions throughout the body that may be limiting your ability to stay active
- These include, but are not limited to, muscle strains, muscle spasms, strength and sensation deficits due to nerve entrapments, nerve pain, tendinopathies, and joint sprains
- Your physical therapist will determine if you are appropriate for this treatment based on your condition, exam, findings, and medical history
Is it safe?
- Your PT performing the treatment meets all OSHA and state requirements and has completed specialized training to safely and effectively optimize your treatment
- Due to the small size of the filiform needle, many patients don’t even feel it penetrate the skin
- Typically patients feel some level of discomfort in the form of a deep ache, however this is brief and If you do not feel the treatment at all then it is not yet working
- Serious complications are rare and occur <0.01% of the time
- Bruising, soreness, fatigue, and pain occur <10% of the time
- This technique is performed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan and is not a standalone treatment
- When you call we will set you up to for an initial evaluation and your physical therapist will determine if you will benefit from dry needling in combination with things like exercise, manual therapy, and other modalities
