The step wasn't very high.
I had stepped up onto it a million times before.
But I was in a hurry.
My mind was a million miles away.
As my toe caught the top of the step, my leg stopped instantly, yet my momentum continued forward and up.
There is something funny about falling.
When you fall, you fall both fast and slow.
You fall fast because you are moving too fast to stop yourself.
You fall slow, because you have the time, ironically, to talk to yourself.
You say things like,
‘oh no, I am falling’,
‘I can’t believe I am falling’,
‘I hope I don’t break something,
‘I know this is gonna hurt’
Can you relate to that?

Once I landed,
I checked myself for obvious injury and felt anger (‘I cant believe I just fell’)
I felt embarrassed (‘Did anyone just see me do a split?’)
but mostly I felt fear (‘OMG, am I beginning to be an old man who falls?’)
I have been a physical therapist for many years. I treat people every day, all day.
I help people get stronger and looser, and more stable.
I am used to being around people who are weak, stiff, and unstable.
It is a very odd and strange day when you switch from being the ‘watcher’ to being the ‘watched’.
